Delhi Capitals (DC) was left crestfallen after a heartbreaking loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Qualifier 2 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Wednesday.
After watching defeat for most of KKR’s innings, DC came back in the game’s death overs with some disciplined bowling to put KKR on the back foot.
The team led by Eoin Morgan, chasing 136, needed 13 runs from the final four overs, but a mini collapse saw KKR needing six runs from the final two balls.
With Ravichandran Ashwin taking back-to-back wickets and hitting a hat-trick in the game’s penultimate installment, it looked like DC would pull off a memorable comeback.
However, KKR’s Rahul Tripathi had other plans and gave Ashwin a six to give KKR victory and a place in the final. While the KKR camp celebrated victory, the CD’s form of defeat left their players devastated.
DC captain Rishabh Pant and starter Prithvi Shaw were visibly upset at the loss and both were seen wiping tears.
Shaw fell to the ground in tears and was picked up and comforted by his teammates as an excited Pant watched him from the sidelines.
DC coach and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was seen offering a few words of comfort to Pant as he wrapped his arms around the 24-year-old Indian.
Previously, DC posted 135/5 in 20 overs, with Shikhar Dhawan scoring the highest at 36. KKR was sailing in response, boosted by the initial partnership of 96 runs.
